Jan Švankmajer's artistic activity extends to several areas. First and foremost, it is a film in which it has gained recognition primarily for its unique experimental work with animation. His collecting of African art and various natural organic and non-organic materials forms the basis of the "Natural History Cabinet" in which he creates artefacts by composing individual elements. The artist's creativity is based mainly on extraordinary imagination, blending the dream with reality. The work meets myths, spells, magical rituals or monsters compiled from real found objects. In 1970, together with his wife Eva, they became members of the Surrealist Group.
