Academic painter, professor Orest Dubay was born on August 15, 1919, in Veľká Poľná and died on October 2, 2005, in Bratislava. Orest Dubay is one of the most important Slovak graphic artists of the 20th century.


From 1939 to 1943 he studied drawing at the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava. In 1948 he took a position as an assistant at the Department of Art Education of the Faculty of Education, Charles University in Bratislava. In 1949-84 he worked as a teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts, 1968-71 he received a position of a rector at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, in 1964 he was appointed an honorary member of the Accademia Fiorentina Delle art.


In 1977, Orest Dunay was awarded the title of National Artist and also the Grand Prix at the Biennial of Slovak Graphic Arts in Bánská Bystrica. In 1981 he won the Ex aeguo Award for Contemporary Slovak Graphic Arts in Bánská Bystrica.
